Installation Suggestions for Acoustiblok on Existing Subfloor

If an installation requires Acoustiblok to be installed on top of the subfloor there are different options depending upon the final finish of the floor.

Carpet Floor Finish

Unroll AcoustiMat Acoustic Underlay perpendicular to the planned direction of Acoustiblok. Tape all seams using Acoustigrip Tape. If needed run a bead of adhesive along the edges to prevent the Acoustipad from curling up..

Install the Acoustiblok Isolation Membrane in the opposite direction leaving a vary small gap at the perimeter.. Apply Acoustic Sealant and Acoustiblok Tape to all seams in one of the following methods:

Install the tack strip using fasteners long enough to compensate for the additional 6mm to 9mm height of the Acoustiblok 3mm / 6mm Isolation Membrane and AcoustiMat Acoustic Underlay.

Use Acoustiblok Acoustical Sound Sealant to fill in the perimeter gap.

Install the carpet padding and carpet per manufacturers’ instructions.

Wood Floor Finish

When installing a rigid floor finish on top of Acoustiblok Isolation Membrane it is advised to incorporate an acoustic underlay onto the subfloor prior to the Acoustiblok. The chosen underlay should be installed perpendicular to the planned direction of the Acoustiblok.

AcoustiWool / AcoustiMat Acoustic Underlays can be loose laid or spot glued onto the subfloor. Do not overlap the material, abut joint only and fit to the perimeter. Tape all seams.

Roll the Acoustiblok 3mm / 6mm Isolation Membrane over the underlay leaving a 2mm to 3mm gap at the perimeter. Ensure the use of Acoustiblok Acoustic Sealant and Acoustiblok Jointing Tape to all seams, joints and the perimeter. You may spot glue the Acoustiblok. If the Acoustiblok is not lying flat, allow it to sit overnight at ambient room temperature.

For engineered or solid wood follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Verify compatability of recommended adhesive with the Acoustiblok material. You may also further decouple the floor assembly by adding free floating plywood or other suitable substrate on top of the Acoustiblok as the subfloor.

For mechanically fastened engineered or solid wood flooring, you may install it directly on top of the Acoustiblok following its manufacturers’ instructions. The recommended installation is to have a floating plywood substrate as in the previous step. This will further decouple the floor assembly, but also prevent the mechanical fixings from penetrating to the subfloor below preventing the transmission of mechanical noise into the ceiling assembly below.

Tile Floor Finish

Subfloor construction must comply with relevant industry standards.

When installing a tile finish on top of Acoustiblok Isolation Membrane it is advised to incorporate an acoustic underlay onto the subfloor prior to the Acoustiblok. The chosen underlay should be installed perpendicular to the planned direction of the Acoustiblok and adhered to the subfloor with  appropriate adhesive.

Acoustiblok is an inert material and most systems can be installed directly on top however depending on the exact tile finish such as marble and natural stone for example, the contractor may wish to incorporate a plywood or other suitable surface underlayment on top of the Acoustiblok.

If only the Acoustiblok Isolation Membrane is installed you may install the tiling directly adhering with the appropriate adhesive following the manufacturers’ guidelines.
