Southern Water Pumping Station Goes Quiet
An acoustic lagging system made from Acoustiblok 3mm insulation material quietened noisy pipework at a main underground sewage pumping station for Southern Water in Portsmouth.
Air passing through a non-return valve caused a high pitched whistle leading to vibration and resonance issues, which were so severe the company faced a Noise Abatement Order in light of residents’ complaints.
4D, a main contractor which helps to deliver the utility company’s programme of water improvements across the South East, consulted with Acoustiblok UK, to implement a solution for the Eastney plant to resolve the night time disturbance, which had reached LAeq levels at 94.7dB.
As a result an Acoustiblok lagging wrap around the above ground pipework was installed by 4D and finished with an external tin-work casing for aesthetic appearance.
“We had to source and implement a solution quickly and Acoustiblok worked exceptionally well. It was easily installed and the problem has completely disappeared, with no more complaints from residents.”
Colin Cummings, 4D (Southern Water).
