Acoustiblok 3mm Isolation Membrane Ceiling Installation

Acoustic Ceiling Installation

Owners of property and businesses often come across noise problems.  This typically happens when noise from outlets such as shops, restaurants and bars passes through the ceiling to people living in flats and apartments above. However, this noise transfer can be prevented with a good acoustic ceiling installation.

Different types of ceilings can be treated with Acoustiblok’s 3mm sound insulation membrane, a highly versatile material. It is used to fully line ceiling assemblies to dramatically reduce airborne and structural airborne noise levels.

The example in this case study shows a gymnasium and dance studio, often highly resonant spaces creating lots of noise. As a result the owners needed a high performance sound insulation material to combat the studio’s increased acoustic levels. Critically they wanted to achieve this without losing the room’s head height.

Noise from the studio was also travelling through vertical walls to horizontal ceiling structures. This is called flanking transmission and a type of noise transfer which is easily treated with Acoustiblok’s Sound Insulation Membrane. The material is directly installed onto the existing board substrate or onto a framing system, which can also house an open cell acoustic absorbing layer of QuietFibre.

Acoustiblok’s membrane is a unique viscoelastic polymer material with a high density mineral content, heavy yet extremely flexible. As sound waves cause the material to flex, internal friction occurs. The acoustic energy from the sound waves is dissipated into undetectable trace amounts of heat energy. To put the material’s performance into perspective, 3mm of Acoustiblok in a standard stud wall  will result in more sound reduction than 300mm of dense poured concrete.

“The effects were tremendous and allow us to create significant acoustic levels without an issue to the rooms above. Acoustiblok was not a stand alone material but without it we would have had to have incorporated much more material and associated depths which in essence would have meant a redesign.”
